Why might your morning coffee be healthier than your afternoon coffee?

Are you one of those people who can hardly get out of bed without coffee in the morning or do you tend to reach for a cup in the afternoon to overcome your energy slump? The time of day when you enjoy your coffee could be surprisingly important for your health - and even have an impact on your life expectancy.

New research clearly shows that coffee in the morning could be much healthier than coffee drunk throughout the day. But why exactly is this the case?

Coffee in the morning: a question of timing

Scientists have analyzed data from over 40,000 adults to find out how the timing of coffee consumption affects mortality rates and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The results were astonishing:

Those who drank their coffee between 4:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon had a 16% lower risk of dying early compared to people who did not consume coffee at all. The effect on the heart was even more impressive: the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease fell by as much as 31% among morning coffee fans.

How much coffee makes the difference?

The quantity is also interesting: those who drank two to four cups of coffee in the morning benefited the most. Light coffee drinkers (just one cup) also benefited, but the effect was significantly weaker. But beware: those who spread their coffee consumption throughout the day do not see any significant health benefits compared to non-coffee drinkers.

Why does the time of day play a role?

Researchers suspect that coffee is particularly effective in the morning, as it harmonizes better with our body's natural rhythm. The body is often more inflamed in the morning, and the anti-inflammatory properties of coffee may be most effective at this time of day.

Another important factor is the impact on sleep: coffee consumption in the afternoon or evening can negatively affect your sleep. And poor sleep has been shown to be linked to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders and obesity.

What's the healthiest way to enjoy your coffee?

If you want to benefit from the health benefits of coffee in the long term, you should ideally limit your coffee intake to the morning and drink no more than four cups. This way, you can perfectly combine enjoyment and health without disturbing your sleep.

Conclusion: timing is everything

Not only does your coffee taste particularly good in the morning - it could also help to prolong your life and keep your heart healthy. Just give it a try: Move your last coffee to the morning hours and see if it makes you feel fitter and healthier!
